Boren was the long time Democratic senator from Oklahoma, completely dependent on oil money when he was in the senate. en.wikipedia.org. When he retired he became the president of the University of Oklahoma and is a big fan of their sports programs. When he was in the senate through the 80s and parts of the 90s, he occupied roughly the same political space as Sam Nunn. I always thought of him as an instrument not only of the oil industry but he was a big cold warrior and was thus instrumental in providing barrels of money for the defense industry.
