Shane,

Really interesting article about Microsoft Labs. I think it is great for Microsoft -- as they have long suffered from a failure to innovate. Perhaps it will, over a period of time, cure this illness.

The Bell Labs of 70s was a truly great organization. I think it would be great to have another one.

Thanks Shane. I guess I need to qualify my statement. I was referring to the world that I am most familiar with, the engineers. If you look at MS in the late 80's and early 90's they were a top draw for SW engineers from the leading universities. These days, MS is an IBM (as evidenced by their research labs), and not necessarily a cool place to work. Young aggressive upstarts are where the real action and opportunity is. Not that MS does not and will not have top talent.

As for basic researchers, I am impressed with MS' commitment. Big companies like IBM and MS can afford to spend the big money, and do get some good technology from the research. But, I doubt that it falls into a "profitable" line of business.
