In order of Canada not have a credit on US wealth, US produces its own oil and gas. Canada would have a credit on US wealth if it sold lots of oil and gas in exchange for USD.

Those USD in the hands of the Canadian oil exporters have to be exchanged to Canadian Dollars (CAD).

That rises the price of CAD vis a vis USD. Over the years Canada had coasted nicely with a hard currency solely because it had this big customer south of its border.

Better even, Canada could get cheap, very cheap credit, to do whatever they wanted, since the debt was guaranteed to continuous flow of USD to Canada.

Voilá! Rich country Canada.
