We still are encumbered by these religious phantasms and they just dont "go away" ...that writer is from Bangladeshi & North India which certainly banks so much hope on education after 5,000 yrs of entrenched belief , now hopefully being balanced with scientific questioning . What is getting carried away is he being put to death for apostacy for such beliefs even today ...

But should qualify that Islam does not date back 5000yrs as does Hinduism and thru invasion & mass murder in some 10's of millions thru evangelical marauding led to even more millions dead in modern history .

The same question could be posed of some superior Alien presence that you might or allude or subscribe to , in the name of what superior intelligent conscience would that alien sit by & let all this suffering occur ? Thats after taking the time to visit this one small planet at the edge of one galaxy out billions out of trillions of planets ?
