Their primary misstep was letting the unions get control of the company.

When you have a pension fund -- created under intense union pressure -- that is growing without bound, consuming every nickel the company can generate, you're going to have problems with everything from engineering to marketing.

When you can't fire useless employees and replace them with robots just because the unions want the jobs to remain available, you're not going to be able to compete with companies which have that flexibility.

When the unions come out of the bankruptcy better off than the company does, it is not a good thing.
