Well, I dont think there is sufficient scientific evidence to support Elmat's claim.

OTOH the flight of beasts to escape the jaws of death could be attributed to instinct as opposed self awareness.... it could also be BOTH.

Personally, I am inclined to believe that much of the animal kingdom lacks the kind of self awareness that Elmat alludes to...and they avoid death instinctively.

Having said that, It appears that there are certain species of animals that display a keen awareness of their mortality: elephants in particular
