Shade is a value the magnolia and elm produce. If they added no value it means your not getting anything useful out of them.

Like I said we're working off of two different definitions. In my world, added value is in addition to the base or some other metric. If your meaning were correct and added value simply meant value, then the term would be redundant. If your meaning were correct, everything with any value would have added value, which would make it a useless notion.

If you sell what you produce for more than it costs you to produce, you have added value.

The added value is the delta. If you are the third stage of production and you add value, then the difference between stage two and stage three is your added value. The value added in stage two is someone else's added value. You don't get credit for it.

So your talking local monopolies, not taking over the nations health care (or just the hospital side of it).
