Religion and the State are both stronger when they are separate and distinct. I don't want to take away anybodies crutch but I don't want to be hit over the head with it either. Look at Spain during the Inquisition after they expelled their administrative class the Jews and the imbeciles that took over. Compare that to the early USA when a man could carve out his own destiny and of course 95% failed but they had the choice to live and die as they pleased. Can you imagine anyone bowing to Bishop Brumar or Friar Gregoree? That is the world they want - don't let it happen on your watch.
