That's not necessarily the case with the 3D portions of Microsoft's new DirectX API. It allows the application to create 3D primitives and set them in motion. Maintaining the 3D objects and moving them can be handled entirely by the 3D card without the CPU's intervention.

I agree with the original point that there's no reason to clog the CPU with these 3D calculations except to come up with a cheap 3D solution that doesn't require a better 3D card. There's plenty of other processing for the CPU to take care of.
