"How can Brazil stay competitive when it's so expensive?" Because it is competitive producer of: Coffee, Sugar, Tobacco, Frozen Orange Juice, Soy beans, beef, pork poultry and Iron ore.

We can't print money. We need to sell stuff to pay for our imports.

Presently engaged on an USD224 billion investment program to become major oil exporter.

It will be interesting to see if Brazil is able to make the transition to fully developed country after the low hanging fruit of development, agriculture and natural resources, are completely harvested.
