Windows 8 represents a big bet on Microsoft's part that they can jump start a new, tablet oriented platform from their Windows desktop monopoly. Users of Windows 8 on the desktop will be a captive audience that present eyeballs for Metro, whether they like it or not. This captive audience is all the incentive developers will need to make Metro-style apps, which will benefit users of both x86 and ARM tablets as well as phones.

Would anyone buy a Metro tablet instead of an iPad? Only if it is better and it has a thriving tablet-focused ecosystem. I doubt the desktop environment will be much of a draw at all, especially not in the ARM fork. As a Windows Phone user, I'm very interested in a Win8 tablet myself, because the interface and fluidity are fresh and useful. But the thought of using it in desktop mode has no appeal whatsoever.
