Keith, MSFT used IBM to get what it wanted. Once that happened, MSFT prevailed over IBM with DOS/Windows vs. OS/2. More importantly to my "Eggheads don't get it" argument, however, is WHY did Microsoft get to use IBM? Well, it's because Gary Kildall (CPM) had his head in the sand, putting his pride/nobility/innovativeness/superiority above making a prudent business decision with big bad/evil IBM. If only he didn't have that foolish mentality.... That's why Bill Gates isn't an egghead; he didn't let personal matters interfere with his business. I think your assertion that Microsoft doesn't have superior strategy or marketing is wrong. Most experts (and eggheads) will agree that that is why Microsoft is where they are today. After all, that is the crux of their dismay--that with inferior imitations, Microsoft outmarketed their superior and innovative products. Let me also clarify my original post: Sure, an "egghead" (which you say you are) can make a lot of money working for a company. I know this; my point is that the company (not the company employees) can't be successful with the egghead mentality. For example, engineers at companies like Apple, Novell, Corel, and Borland are all very well paid. However, the companies are all struggling while Microsoft Corporation has prospered. I am not being patronizing to suggest that you don't understand the difference between innovation and success. Refer back to my original post, where I said, "Oh wait, eggheads do, in fact, understand this. However, they think there's something noble about rejecting it, and then they deride companies that aren't stuck on their [foolish] ideals (i.e., Microsoft)." I also disagree with your opinion on Gates' "immortality." Bill Gates has quickly become among the most famous people in the world. The man is a cultural icon of legendary status, and will be remembered in the history books because he's not merely known in the techie circle, but in the general population (contrast Bill Gates to Gordon Moore, for instance).
