<<3. The Paul Senior way. Buy a new car AND concurrently buy stock in your car's auto manufacturer<<

So you can end up with a shitty car and lose additional $ on the investment too. A better hedge would be to buy the car and short the stock of the company producing the car.

What? When you buy a diaper, do you also buy KMB? The only rationale I can see is if your purchase will make them more profitable and you want buy in advance of your significant purchase. How many cars are you going to buy? (You have to be kidding.) Or maybe this is why you own so many stocks -- because when you buy something, you have to own the stock too.

I did that with my first new car, a Honda-car (that's what we called them way back then). Did much better than average for an investment. It helped to be in SoCal and able to spot changing trends earlier than much of the country.
