My wife is into indigenous culture and how it has continued to have life and meaning for various of those peoples over time. My wife's interests (which I share) have created a lot of interesting travel and unique experiences for us! In spite of the impact of assimilation and the larger society, tribal culture has still been nurtured and kept alive from within. Nature Gods and Spirits still play a large role in their culture--unlike Christianity which has subsumed many of the Nature Gods under the aegis of Yahweh/Jesus/ Holy Spirit versus Satan and a host of 'Demon' assistants! Christianity can be seen as developing in much the same way these indigenous beliefs develop. Christianity, of course, was heavily influenced by Mithraism and Zoroastrianism from which the polarities of Heaven and Hell and absolute good and evil were developed. It is fascinating how belief can create an interpretation of causation between events which then goes to reinforce the belief. I myself have been a student of world religions and have been in Buddhist Temples, Shaking tents, Eckankar groups, Sikh Gurdwaras, and you name it! No matter how sophisticated or modernised you find these religions to be, you will find truly atavistic and barbarian superstitions still living with many of the practitioners at a deep and fundamental inner level. The "EVIL EYE"--WHOOO!!! ... is one that crops up repeatedly when one probes deeper! :-) As you may have gathered, neither I nor my wife are religious. Most people with a sincere interest in actually studying these matters are NOT! Joseph Campbell, for example. You will find some of the retards on this thread (such as the primitive barbarian, Brumstone) who will pretend that I believe in animal spirits because I study Christianity and Native Culture and Shintoism and indeed all religious practices! However, I believe all religions to be man-made and mostly ridiculous! And for the record (once again!)-- I DO NOT believe in Animal Spirits, Spirit guides, or Spirits in any way, shape, or form...excepting perhaps good vodka! :-) That is not to say that I do not share a sense of awe and wonder about the UNKNOWN with such people as Einstein and Spinoza. Hey! What is wrong with a little name dropping! In case you have not figured it out, people like Brumstone hate me because I consider them Fundy Freaks. So you will see them culling the odd post out of context and trying to misrepresent it! Whenever you see an attack post against me simply check out the author! Guaranteed you will find a FUNDY FREAK at the other end! LOL! I explained to him that having an interest in something does not transfigure into advocacy--but when a person intends to misrepresent you they are going to misrepresent you. PERIOD!! As an atheist, I expect to be attacked by Fundy Freaks. It goes with the territory!! But Brummy generally avoids me because I have sent him scuttling down his rat holes so often!!
