Hiram: I don't know about you but I have a hard time believing the "universal" modem can be offered at a cost that is competitive w/ an MCSN-only modem. The economics (cost per square millimeter of die area) just don't add up. The MCNS downstream PHY chip alone is an extremely complex, highly integrated mixed-signal wonder. Add to that the MCNS upstream and the MAC (which no one has yet integrated these 3 as a group on a single chip) and this alone is an aggressive integration undertaking. Adding selectable dual mode sCDMA capability (one of which hasn't even been developed yet) on top of this, AND full router functions, in a single die, would seem to be such a significant increase in die size that they couldn't possible sell it for the same price and still make money. End of '98 for this level of integration sounds "extremely optimistic" to me. Depending on the deployment rate of MCNS headends in '98, '99 may be too late to capture much of the market anyway, but only time will tell. I don't question the technical capabilities of their product, I only question their optimistic deployment and integration predictions, as well as widespread use.
