tom: In your "simpler case", where the input source is an untraceable external file ....

For a manual effort, all you have to do is look at the source code that reads the file, and look for all fields that have girls' names. The programmer used his ex-girl friends' names as calendar dates. It helped him remember about his 'dates' with them.

Oh, and for a "fully" automated date search in that scenario? Simply look for all 2 byte fields that might be years (YY), 4 byte fields that might be years and months (YYMM), all 6 byte fields that might be years, months, and days (YYMMDD), all 5 byte fields that might be YY/MM, all 8 byte fields that might be YY/MM/DD, all 5 byte fields that might be Julian format (YYDDD), all ....

Oh, never mind. It's too difficult. Just buy a new application.

Cheers,
