Susan...You will not be subject to any penalties due to the sale of AMTX during Dec. and you will be able to use the CASH from the sale to pay your capital gains tax. It could have been worse and you could have had a loss carry forward...BE HAPPY!!!

Hey, who knows, maybe AMTX won't end up being bought by TI or maybe just not at $20???++++!!!

(taxes)

Susan, you won't have to pay a penalty if you send the required estimated tax by 1/15/98 (since the large capital gain occured in the 4Q of the tax year). The tax form showing earnings for each quarter is difficult to complete (if you do your own return), but will avoid any penalty if the IRS gets its estimated taxes by 1/15. Also, if your withholding this year equals or exceeds your total tax due for 1996, no penalty will be due.

I'm not a CPA but I believe the above is correct (I've done my own for years).

Great investing! Nine years. WOW.

Regards,

Bernie

Susan;

>>The AMATI stock is asizable part of my portfolio. The capital gains tax
is considerable in that I have not had an opportunity to plan for the
tax consequences, not to mention the penalties and interest I may incure
from not estimating my taxes properly.<<

I believe you have till Dec 15 to make an estimated payment to avoid penalties. If you have Quicken 98 the Tax Planner can help with different scenarios as far as what the tax consequences will be. Good luck Dave

My condolences Susan. Not because you have a big profit. But because the ICOT/AMTX story has an apparently unhappy ending. Unfortunately, the Amati academicians were unprepared for the cannibals of Wall St.. Well, I'm sure we all got a good education. And, since you're so good at getting in early I must ask: What are your picks for 98?

Good Luck and Good Fortune
