Sinopec said it had successfully flowed shale gas at an average 17,900 Mcf/day from 21 test wells in the Yuanba gas field in Sichuan province.

17.9k mcf / day / well ~ that's a good flow rate for a shale gas well. Anyone have a list of O&G companies positioned to benefit from shale gas development in China?

PS> Argentina, on the other hand, is doing everything in their power to kill their shale gas goose.

China's Sinopec launches first shale gas project
BEIJING | Tue May 15, 2012 5:27am EDT
reuters.com

BEIJING May 15 (Reuters) - Sinopec Group, China's second largest oil and gas producer, has launched its first shale gas project and plans to develop production capacity of 300-500 million cubic metres a year by the end of this year, it said on Tuesday.

Production capacity at the Fuling block in the gas-rich southwestern city of Chongqing is expected to reach 1 billion cubic metres by 2013, Sinopec said on its website (www.sinopecnews.com.cn).

China is in the very early stages of tapping its potentially large shale gas resources and the government wants to identify the right technology to unlock them over the next few years, aiming for a leap in shale production by 2020.

China aims to produce 6.5 billion cubic metres (bcm) of shale gas by 2015, or roughly 6 percent of China's current total gas production, according to an official target set by the coutnry's top energy agency, the National Energy Administration (NEA), in March.

Oil major Royal Dutch Shell signed a production sharing contract with the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in March to develop a shale gas block in China, the first deal of its kind in the country.

Ukraine sees 2017 for commercial shale gas output
KIEV | Wed May 16, 2012 8:40am EDT

KIEV May 16 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron Corp, Ukraine's partners for exploring and developing shale gas, will start commercial gas production in 2017, a government minister said on Wednesday.

"Drilling is likely to start next year," Environment and Natural Resources Minister Eduard Stavitsky told a news conference of plans which focus on two potentially large shale gas fields.

Shell will develop the Yuzivska area, in eastern Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, while Chevron will explore the Olesska area in the western region of Lviv.

"Commercial extraction on both areas will begin in 2017," he said.

The two areas could yield at least 15 billion cubic metres of gas per year and Yuzivska alone - where about 3,000 wells were likely to be drilled - could produce a total of one trillion cubic metres, he said.

Vt. becomes 1st state to ban hydraulic fracturing
online.wsj.com

Associated Press

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Wednesday signed into law the nation's first ban on a hotly debated natural gas drilling technique that involves blasting chemical-laced water deep into the ground.

The Democrat, surrounded at a Statehouse ceremony by environmentalists and Twinfield Union School students who pushed for the ban, said the law may help Vermont set an example for other states.

Sinopec, Conocophilips to research W China shale gas
( Xinhua) 09:13, December 26, 2012
english.peopledaily.com.cn

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Sinopec Group, the world's fifth-largest oil company, said Tuesday it will jointly study shale gas development with Conocophilips in west China's Sichuan Basin over the next two years.

A statement from Sinopec said the Sinopec Exploration Southern Company, a Sinopec subsidiary, will conduct research on the exploration, development and production of shale gas with Conocophilips China in the Qijiang block, an area located in the southwestern Sichuan Basin, where rich shale gas is deeply embedded.

Conocophilips will carry out two-dimensional seismic surveys and drill two wells in the block.

Sources at Sinopec said the deal will have great significance in terms of evaluating shale gas reserves in the region and will help improve Sinopec's shale gas development techniques.

China is estimated to hold the world's biggest reserves of shale gas, enough to support the country's gas consumption for nearly 200 years, Moody's said in March.

Domestic oil producers and refiners are shifting parts of their resources to the unconventional energy, as limited oil reserves and unstable imports are making it harder to meet the country's energy demand.

In April, Sinopec acquired one-third of the equity of Devon Energy Corp's five shale gas assets in the U.S. for about 2.44 billion U.S. dollars.
