Depending on where you are located and if there is a local warranty shop, the same is true for PCs. If you live in a big city, most times you can take it to a local shop that your extended warranty covers. For myself, the one time I had need for service on a laptop, I FedExed it in and had it back repaired and in my hands in 2 days. I'm sure the local aapl shop, depending on what is wrong with your device, or how old it is, or what parts may not have on hand, will not always turn you around the same day. The savings in what you save by not paying the Apple tax are huge for the one time in a blue moon that you might need service. The only other device that I needed service on was a iPhone 3GS while I ended up replacing 4 times with Apple. It was, and still it, that much of a piece of crap. Everything else I've ever owned has never needed warranty work, except the laptop I mentioned and part of that was my fault (the power connector on the motherboard broke after the laptop fell from bed as I fell asleep doing some work :). It still ended up getting fixed under warranty and I was back and running in 2 days.
