BS, stories about how difficult life was back in the day and how bad everyone was are a bit boring. Yes, Maoris used to kill and eat neighbouring tribes. There were too many people, so of course they did. They didn't have refrigerators, so they broke their victims limbs to stop them escaping, leaving them on an island, which was their "larder". The meat would stay fresh that way. If you think working in a coal mine is tough, how about that?

Children back in the day were probably hungry so they were told that if they worked in the coal mine they could get some money to buy some food. That seems better than starving. Today, children in Africa have jobs as soldiers, paid to attack people to get loot. That beats starving to death.
