So what percentage of the blame would you lay at the hands of the GOP? Where were all the tea baggers and right wingers in 1975 when they really should have been even more pissed?

Up until 1980, the US was paying down its debt from WW II and getting its fiscal house in order. There were problems but more and more people were enjoying the post war prosperity and the middle class was expanding. Things began to change under Reagan. He cut back on institutional care...........former mental patients were released into the streets. For the first time since the Great Depression, the US had a sizeable homeless population. Gov't expenses began to exceed gov't revenue as taxes to the rich were cut. Fewer and fewer people controlled more and more of America's resources and wealth. Reagan talked about states' rights, especially in the South, as a euphemism for white superiority and tried to undo the civil rights legislation of the 1960s. He called on the so called 'silent majority' to speak out.........like they were the real Americans [shades of Sarah Palin]. I think the seeds of conservative obstructionism started under Nixon but found fertile ground with Reagan. What made matters worse...........Reagan came off like the all American nice guy..........he appeared to be the opposite of the bad guy Nixon......when in fact, I don't think they were much different.

I think its then that the country got on a bad track.........when the silent majority and evangelical groups found their voice and started to speak out like their views were more important than the rest of the population. It was in the 90s that conservative obstruction came into full bloom............Gingrich threatened to close down Congress. That eventually led to the arrogance the Rs showed during the 2000 election where they pretty much sealed up the election thru a series of smoke and mirror moves. And the result was a very destructive 8 years under Bush.

So to answer your question........I blame Rs for 70% of the mess we are in; the rest is on the Dems.........and 100% on the American people.
