all:briefing: (DELL) 83 7/8 +1/2: We expect you will like this story. Probably the biggest story of the day, at least once they report earnings
after the close. Published consensus estimates for DELL show expectations of $0.65 a share. However, this is one of those companies where the market comes
to "expect" earnings "above-expectations," or at least above published consensus estimates. In the past three fiscal quarters Dell has beaten estimates by 5
cents (for quarter ended Jul 97), 16 cents (Apr 97) and 18 cents (Jan 96). This declining trend is expected to continue, as the so-called "whisper numbers"
today are for about $0.66 to $0.67 per share earnings. In other words, expectations are that Dell will beat expectations by a penny or two. But
whether or not a report that Dell beats expectations by a penny is really good enough, given the fact they have beaten by more each of the previous three
quarters, remains to be seen. Isn't Wall Street fun?
