You seem to see the govt being the main means to support society. Who is the Govt. Neil? Isn't it us? The markets crashed, jobs fled the US when the Govt. fell asleep at the wheels under W. why is it that you and I and many others here on Si had the opportunity to improve out lot but people of color couldn't and those few who did had to be twice as good. You think Clarence Thomas is an eminent jurist and that is why he is on the SC. He is there because we need a Black on the Court. Sotomayor had to prove herself and had a track record before being chosen but Thomas wasn't and it was something the Black community "was given". Do you get the hint that I am against affirmative action but at the same time I am for providing fair and equal opportunities including that added help and assistance to those whose ancestors were denied that? I am very familiar with discrimination in a society since I grew up in one where I was the privileged class. I have great hopes that this country will overcome that soon and instead of professing a way of life to other nations it will serve as a living example of racial harmony to include equal opportunities.
