I remember posting here, or elsewhere when Florida passed that law that it was insane. And no, to my knowledge there is no attempt to repeal it, though even the author of the bill says it needs to be revised. To my mind it's a perfect example of what happens when our elected officials go 100% ideology and 0% pragmatic (backed by special interests). People die. It's the poster child for what's wrong with our democracy right here and right now.

I have family history with Sanford. Although its pretty much suburban Orlando now, it has roots as a racially mixed deeply Southern town, with all that implies. I can easily imagine what's going through the minds of both the black and white folks there. Not pretty.

I have a really bad feeling on how this will eventually play out. And I don't like it one bit. There will be no winner, no matter which side prevails. I think this will be historic, seriously. Sanford will go down with Selma and Montgomery... if things play out like I think they might.

Every electied official should learn the lesson that there are consequences from their actions. They are not playing a game of ideological one upsmanship. They are dealing with real people trying to live together in peace in real communities. It's serious stuff.
