They went from using cane sugar to high-fructose corn syrup at some point as well. There is a world of difference in taste between the too. Probably different physiological effects too. Supposedly, Mexican Coca-Cola was made with cane sugar until just recently and was highly sought.

Mexican Coke (informally "MexiCoke") is Coca-Cola that is made and bottled in Mexico [1] in a thick glass bottle. [2] Although intended for consumption in Mexico, Mexican Coke has become very popular in the United States because of a flavor that Mexican Coke fans call "a lot more natural tasting." [1] This "more natural" taste can be partially attributed to the use of refined cane sugar in Mexican Coke, as opposed to the high-fructose corn syrup [2] found in nearly all soft drinks bottled in the United States. However, due to NAFTA trade implementations that took effect in the past few years, a high volume of US government subsdized high fructose corn syrup is now being traded freely with Mexico, and thus their formulations are changing. As of 2009, many Mexican Coke bottles will read "sucrose or high fructose corn syrup" on the ingredient label, leaving a consumer to wonder which it is.

I remember those days and the syrupy mixture that was sometimes in the bottom of the coke bottle. All gone for the convenience of mass production.
