This is pretty interesting, if a bit scary. The people who claim they can fract without disasters are deluding themselves. There are going to be big problems, probably with water. Probably not everywhere, which will be the rallying cry.

The thing they didn't talk about in the article is the cost of extracted shale (or tar sand). When I fill my tank its not availability that hurts, its the price.

Of course there are various ways of calculating costs and profits. If one calculates the cost of lost natural beauty or health costs it could be considerably higher than the costs paid out by the people who profit. Sometimes your neighbors defray real costs, like drilling oil wells in Brentwood is probably viable but of course Brentwood dwellers have enough economic power to prevent that.
