I'm still surprised that the Democrats gave up the public option without a larger fight. Maybe they didn't understand what they were doing? With the "public option" in place, the bill would - at least - be a meaningful step towards socialized healthcare. it was a perfect Trojan horse, designed to "outcompete" any private entity - because of an access to the deep government pockets. Without the public option the reform is little more than a huge bureaucratic morass. Hundreds of thousands additional public employees, direct and indirect.
