We pay no state taxes and the government is run with the revenue from the Permanent fund. The conservatives fought us every step of the way; and in fact made us give extra tax cuts to the oil companies for their votes. One was called the ELF tax write off. Pure payola to the oil companies, but what we had to give to the Republican's to get it passed. But we out smarted all of them. We did three things. 1) we put it in the consitution and it would take a 3/4 's vote of both houses to touch the principle. That will never happen. 2) No investment IN STATE, so the crooks cannot get their hands on the money. 3) The first thing we do each year is inflation proof the principle by taking the equivelant of the CPI out of that years revenue and put it back into the principle. PS we also eventually got the ELF tax break voted away.
