It was gradually replaced with local police forces. I think NY City was the first city to adopt a local police force. They wore copper badges, the origination of cop today. Today, the police are way too overstretched to be everywhere, so concealed carry laws were adopted. There is mandatory training just like for police in the one important area. Police are trained in all laws. Concealed carry holders only need to understand when they are allowed to pull a weapon or need be use deadly force, not how to enforce speeding tickets and other unrelated issues. There is no difference between an uncover police officer or off duty police officer and a concealed carry holder. They both have non felonious histories and have been trained in the law on the use of firearms and when you cannot and can use deadly force. They are basically free police officers.
