"The 747 flew both before deregulation and afterwards. Perhaps you think the seats became smaller after deregulation"

Don't know about dereg but those seats have damn well became smaller.... Recently I flew overseas with Delta and was offered "COMFORT SEATING" for $80 extra, a real bargain... I was assigned a seat at the stewies location and I had to sit on a metal bar on the front edge of the seat....for about 8 hours, the seat was not bigger, in fact it was smaller. The food tray wasn't a drop down and was inserted in the armrests....I weigh 210 lbs and am 6 ft tall.....the tray would not fit around my waist without it being forced.... Yeah, very comfortable. On the return leg got a "comfort" seat in the main section and a few minutes after boarding an attendent came to tell me that my seat was broken and wouldn't recline....they were going to return my $80 she said...had no other seat to give me. Had to fly another 8-10 hours in full upright position....

I do agree that the obesity problem is making seating for everyone uncomfortable. I don't know what your discussion about dereg is so I'm sorry for interfering....
