I just flew from one place to another from mid August to the end of December on business. The only flight that was even close to a nightmare was when I got to the front of the airport check in counter only 30 minutes early and they told me I had to be there 45 minutes early so I couldn't get on the flight and had to wait several hours for the next one. And even that wasn't really a "nightmare". Nothing else was anything close to being a nightmare. And the most nightmarish part of my flight experience had a lot to do with regulations (specifically security regulations which increase the time from arriving at the airport to getting checked in and then to boarding the plane).

Other than security you have the fact that airports and aircraft are often crowded. That makes the experience worse for each individual but its a good thing overall not a bad one, it means people are flying. In the past crowds would be smaller, because fewer people would fly that often.

Would you really want to pay multiples of what you pay now just to have less crowding, and a few added nice touches on your flight? I certainly wouldn't.
