indicated that 41 million Americans are forgoing air travel due to the hassles involved in doing so today.

And an even larger number forgo flying because of the cost before deregulation. Also a lot of those hassles are because of regulation.

Southwest Airlines has run advertising mocking the penny-ante actions of competitors who are nickel and diming flyers to death.

I had to pay baggage fees, but so what it was still a lot more affordable then it was in the past. Also once again some of the added on costs are because of government.

flyers dislike flying after deregulation so much they reduced their travel and took the train more often...

Oh wait. No they didn't

And here are the stats.

1980 passenger miles is 281,408,852
2010 passenger miles is 677,166,072

That is faster growth than the nation's population growth. Fuel prices are also much higher today than in 1980 even adjusted for inflation.

And as I explained earlier... prices today are much cheaper than in 1980... before being adjusted for inflation.
