Many thanks for the excellent advice. I have printed it out and will be giving it to our friend this weekend.

I appreciate the time you took to provide all of the information -- especially Cooper's principles. Extremely important common sense concepts, many of which we rarely consider, and valuable for every adult to read and understand.

I own and carry an S&W .38 revolver because of the work I am in and the hours I keep at my office, but hope never to have to use it. I have taken a gun safety course and I shoot maybe 3-4 times a year at our local gun club. So, while I certainly wouldn't classify myself as a expert by any means, I believe I am a responsible gun owner and handler. At the same time, I learned from your list of principles.

As I mentioned, our friend (a young woman in her early thirties) is the one interested in the Heiser for personal protection because she works late hours in the city and there have been a rash of attacks on women in her work vicinity over the past year. I have suggested what I believe to be more practical alternatives (similar to what you pictured and described), since I don't believe that size and weight are the most important considerations. Your advice and information will be very valuable, and much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks, MM. I'm not sure a two loader is necessarily a good idea. My wife has a .38 Special 5 shot revolver. Having it makes her feel more comfortable at home when I am away working, sometimes several days and nights back to back. Her gun is an off brand, and is somewhat bulky and heavy. I'll probably need to get her one of the newer fancier lighter models.

I should have her read your post, especially the part about junk in the purse, and having difficulties finding the cell phone.... :)

For someone who is "not qualified to recommend firearms", you sure do a good job of faking it! LOL

Either of the two you posted make excellent carry guns. I like, also, the 'airweight' .38s with concealed hammers .. such as the S&W 442 (below). Just as reliable as any revolver, and even less places for 'purse litter' to get into the mechanism. Plus, they are lightweight, easy to master, and are accurate at any normal 'defensive gun fight' range (1 - 8 feet)... I've even shot them at 25 yards and very seldom miss the vital area of silhouette targets. They will handle the 38 +P too, for just a bit more 'oomph'! One can be had new for right around $425 or so, give or take. Also available in stainless, or titanium as a .357.
