I'm hardly a liberal in the modern meaning of the world, but I'm also sympathetic. Many times, seeing how poor people have difficulties getting decent medical help, the thought crossed my mind - how nice it would be if everyone could get it, without having to worry about money.

However, one doesn't have to be as smart as a chess champ to see what would happen next. Start giving away an expensive, limited resource for free - and very soon, inevitably - you'll need an alternative way of limiting access. In some systems, patients will have to wait for very long periods of time. Or, it will be the job of bureaucrats to determine who gets what, and how soon. Bureaucrats will demand bribes. And so on. It all leads to corruption and a decrease in quality. Not only in healthcare, in everything.

Liberals believe....

Stossel recently featured a couple of evolutionary biologists who were also economically literate.

They claimed that for almost all our existence we existed in small bands, dependent on tribal unity and a strong leader or council for protection against dragons and competing groups. The only path to anything beyond bare subsistence involved enslaving or plundering other clans. It was indeed nature red in tooth and claw.

The consensus seems to be that we've existed in present form for about 200,000 years. If true, 99.75% of out time was spent before a miniscule minority began to learn how to divide and specialize labor and effort. The result was an exponential explosion in knowledge, ability, and material comforts. The potentials of that new social organization have only recently begun spreading across the planet, and that very imperfectly.

An obsolete belief structure may be embedded in our DNA. Even folks who should know better succumb to the idea that with enough effort we'll find a demigod who'll bestow universal peace, prosperity, and the creek don't rise.

Silly!
