The end justifies the means for the greater glory of Lord and God. Selling phoney trinkets is the least of their crimes against humanity. Well there was alot of book learnin too in the monestaries who were great traders of goods & ideas , the trade in fake religious relics has been universal since man built his first stone temples Christianity no different . The early harvesting & trade of rare myrrh & frankincense from exotic legendary lands goes so far back in India , China , Middle East & later Europe, used in all kinds of sacred rituals , healings & ceremonies another minor example but ancient . One points to religious fervor building all those marvelous cathedral structures but when you tie in the economics of competition trade who could bring in the most pilgrims ontop of who had the highest building (wizards of architecture) when you added some famed relic of a saint or location of a miracle this guaranteed everyone would eat & grow rich . (and get reward above) The magnificence of the building & its height of course is an updated replay of the ancient pyramids and similar King/Pharoh testament of who had been bleesed with the most skillful builders with secret knowledge from above (and largest phallus )who could construct that largest sanctum which would beckon God's presence on earth . And taller & more delicate they grew , till they fell down just as the castles walls got wider & taller too & the dungeons deeper. An entire thread could be devoted to the politics & economic trends that rose out of all this building for "God" , that of course eneded up with the Royal blooded family dynasties & peasant slavery that lasted for centuries . If one goes back to ancient Egypt, or the Incans or Aztecs , it was totally the same . Or down in Texas we see the moneyed Oil dynasties that rose out of that trade or in NYC industrial rich etc . * All except for the North American Innuits who by force of harsh climate , small spread out populations by nature remained reduced down to the essential we "the people " which shows that the idea of "Equality" & endowed by Nature with Equal Rights could manifest itself long before any Christian influence or Dogma comes along .
