I've read something a bit more dire about Britain in the last couple of days on the Economist website. The thrust of the argument wis that not only is the recovery slower in Britain than in the US (factors noted) but it's slower than from the Great Depression of the 30s.

Oil: You are right, it is all about China and the developing countries simply outstripping supply. Overpopulation, industrialization and AGW are taking us on hte fast track to disaster as you keep pointing out.

Few seemed concerned though?
