As a percentage of GDP makes sense, but a little context is also important. The more debt there is the more of the budget goes for debt service. So each increase seen in my post contributes to the legacy that we have now.

Obama did inherit a very bad situation. I think anyone in that situation would compare not very favorably to past presidents in term of deficit as a percentage of GDP.

So if the deficit is seriou and to be addressed all parts of the budget should fairly contribut to the budget deduction. Defense and other darlings of the right included.
