To all: SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 24, 1997-- Bay Networks Provides Hardware And Network Management Tools For One Of Arizona's Largest Non-Profit Health Care Providers Bay Networks, Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today announced that Carondelet Health Network, one of Arizona's largest non-profit health care providers, has implemented Bay Networks' equipment into their multi-campus networking environment which spans the city of Tuscon and includes 3 sites. Carondelet's network includes Bay Networks routers, Ethernet switches and the Optivity(R) Enterprise management suite. Carondelet's upgraded network relies on a ATM ring connecting two Carondelet hospitals and its management services organization facility in Tucson. Bay Networks equipment will enable Carondelet to deploy several new mission-critical business and clinical applications, including enterprise-wide Internet access. As part of their $1.2 million network upgrade with Bay Networks, Carondelet installed Backbone Concentrator Node(TM) (BCN(R)), Backbone Link Node(TM) (BLN(R)) and Distributed 5000(TM) switching hubs and chassis. "We selected Bay Networks because of their commitment to open systems, standards compliance and their ability to deliver enhanced fast Ethernet capabilities," said Larry Carpenter, technical services manager for Carondelet Health Network in Tucson. "By the end of this year, we plan to double the number of users. Bandwidth issues, alternate failsafe paths and the standardization of protocols were the main factors driving our network redesign." The network upgrade provides Carondelet with speed, reliability, link redundancy and centralized management. Carondelet moved its WAN network from point-to-point, copper T1's to the 155 Mbps ATM WAN fiber ring. Unlike the previous T1 link, the ATM ring will divert critical information if the link fails, allowing the three facilities to enter and access patient information at all times. Bay Networks' StackProbe(TM) remote monitoring (RMON) probes and Optivity software will allow Carondelet to manage the LAN/WAN network devices from a newly implemented centralized help desk. Prior to the introduction of this help desk, technicians had to travel to remote facilities to resolve network problems. Now, technicians can access Optivity from their desks or remotely from laptop PC's, saving time and allowing Carondelet to reallocate resources previously committed to network maintenance. The Bay Networks network upgrade enables Carondelet to offer numerous collaborative applications including: pharmacy connections in the nursing units; laboratory systems orders and results; bedside terminals and patient monitoring systems; medical record transcription; contract management; financial and purchasing systems; asset management systems; email and Internet access. Carondelet plans to add additional facilities to its WAN network in the coming year. KG
