Apparently Congress has the constitutional authority though to FORCE all of us to buy a gun Militias were funded and provided by the States - so not exactly a Federal mandate to citizens and certainly not all. The "well regulated" part meant the militia was to procure certain types of arms so they could use a common powder, ball and caps. Of course after your service you could sell your musket and recoup any expense or simply use it to put meat on your table or defense against injuns. Since everyone thinks the government should provide things now days - how about some full auto m16's for us able bodied types? PS; You got a tax write off if you had to buy the arms yourself: and every citizen so enrolled, and providing himself with the arms, ammunition and accoutrements, required as aforesaid, shall hold the same exempted from all suits, distresses, executions or sales, for debt or for the payment of taxes.
