I think looking forward is a great philosophy for investing. However, it is a terrible philosophy for ensuring we have a level playing field in the markets and that no man is above the law. If we don't prosecute the criminals in this country when they are well connected or rich, then we are on the slippery slope to the day when the common man decides this is nothing more than a despotic aristocracy and a revolution ensues. I'd prefer we have no revolutions and the surest way to avoid one is to create a society that is run by the rule of law and where every man is treated equally. This idea that we just need to let bygones be bygones is very corrosive. The country that doesn't learn from history is doomed to repeat it.
