Let's say you are in a bar with a bunch of lawyers. You tell the room "I'm a lawyer too". You know you are not a lawyer, everyone in the room knows you are not a lawyer.

Did you commit a gaff?

If you don't mean "gaffe," it is possible that you committed a "gaff." One of the meanings of "gaff" is hoax or fraud. In that case you attempted that but were caught. Coincidentally, under that meaning, Obama is a "gaff."

Do not try to gaff a shark. You will find the pointy end embedded in your skin.
