Synopsis From Worldsources Online, Inc. (WSO) Washington D.C.:

WSO said that Networking company Ascend Communications Pte Ltd said that it plans to focus on its forte of providing equipment for telecommunications carriers and Internet service providers in Malaysia, a niche that sets it apart from other networking companies.

WSO mentions that Ascend currently offers a full range of networking solutions for the Internet, intranets, and extranets, networks that link intranets. It is also a major manufacturer of routers, communications hubs between networks of different technologies.

WSO says that, speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, its general manager for south Asian operations Kenneth Kan said Ascend was also interested in participating in the Multimedia Super Corridor.
Kan said that the company is currently evaluating whether to locate its regional test bed for video conferencing and R2 signalling in the
MSC, or to set up a mini technical assistance centre.

Kan comments that Ascend currently has technical assistance centres in the United States, Japan, and France. Kan said Ascend's Asia Pacific region business, excluding Japan, is expected to achieve sales of US$80 million (RM272 million) this year, of which the main generators of revenue are Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

Per Kan, ASND has projected a sales growth of 20 per cent for the region. Ascend's global sales is expected to hit US$1 billion by year end. Commenting on the Asian region's growth, he predicted Indonesia
to be the main contributor to sales next year as it is rapidly
building up its telecommunications infrastructure. China is another country which is expected to achieve a high growth rate over the next few years.

WSO comments that Ascend is the result of a merger with another US company in July this year, Cascade Communications Corp. Cascade specialises in switching products which permit high-speed communications between same technology networks.
