David, The Winterm is a dumb terminal because it emulates an x-Term in the sense that ithas no intelligence outside the software it runs. Sun and other manufacturers have made terminals (as well as NCD & others) for years. They were an inexpensive alternative to fat-clients (cost $100 or so), booted from the net and ran everything you wanted to run. One problem: performance. The end user is at the mercy of your subnet. There never seemed to be enough capacity on the wire of an active, dynamic shop. Is there any reason to think that the Winterm will be any different?? If so, how? The real improvement in the NC is in SOFTWARE, not hardware, in its design as an application driver. Intelligence in the JVM and is sub-system will make all the difference in the world. Why else would Sun scrap its entire line of x-terminals in preparation for introduction of the JavaMachine? After all the shouting is over, the NC will work as efficiently as a fat-client at a fraction of the cost and the Winterms will be in the bucket with all the old x-terms. cheers, cherylw
