The background of Marbury v. Madison is interesting. The case involved and appointment of a minor federal official. My recollection of the details is vague, but I do remember that Jefferson did not believe the Federal Courts could void a law passed by the co-equal branch. Marshall gave Jefferson a victory on the appointment issue while he managed to establish the precedent of Supreme Court Supremecy.
