Poverty was pervasive (by modern standards at least) because the country was so much poorer. Improvment after some big government program, doesn't imply improvement because of that program. Not that I'm saying that the government does nothing useful, but you can't reasonably put all, or even the majority of improvement in people's standard of living on the government. Even for those government programs that where effective and useful investments, the money needed needed to fund them came from the private sector.

Ignorance? Lack of compassion? You and the loony left only purport to care. True caring and true compassion is creating an economic system that generates the wealth you parasites need to live on. As for compassion. You speak from absolute ignorance of how we share with those less fortunate. Moan, in my working life I generated the wealth that made your parasitic life possible.
