There are a large number of biotech conferences in the fall, culminating in the H and Q conference in January. Some bios announce their good news at these conferences and everyone gets to hear what's going on in the industry.

However, simultaneously there is considerable tax selling in Oct, Nov, and the earlier part of December. Then there is the year end rally and the January effect for small caps. So the seasonal trend combines with the year end rally and the January effect. Of course one cannot count on such a biotech rally, altho it has established a strong pattern, and in the current nervous market, companies without earnings are more vulnerable than others.
