One has to work their ass off and give up a lot to get a PHD degree

But one in liberal arts is nearly worthless to society.

Did you get a PHD? One has to work their ass off and give up a lot to get a PHD degree! If it is so easy why don't more people do it.

A Phd is much more about perseverance than brilliance. It is not easy, but a lot more people could get one if it were worthwhile. To get from a MS to a Phd generally takes at least 3 years while you are accumulating more debt and earning no income. Except in the liberal arts, jobs that require a Phd rarely pay much more than jobs that don't. In many fields, the ROI on a Phd is negative.
Your claim was that professors are hard working. They probably worked hard for a few years as grad students, but once they get that professor job it is the cushiest job around.
