It really was quite remarkable. The press attempted to get them at each others throat, but in the first round, very briefly they stayed on cue. Soon thereafter the press took control and the candidates began to devour each other to the applause of the liberal press.

In contrast the last Democrat primaries began with about the same long list of potentials and not really potentials. However, they rarely attacked each other, answering every question first with a statement about George Bush or the last 8 years.

Very different.

Some observers claim Mitt actually started it. For sure he was a vigorous participant in the mud slinging. And by virtue of the fact that he had by far the most money he was the biggest slinger.
