Consumer capitalism's game plan prefers an unaware and vaguely dissatisfied populace that tries to fill the emptiness inside with shiny new products. Capitalism doesn't prefer anything. A capitalist free market is how sophisticated markets act when given freedom rather than pushed down by government (and even when government does act against them you have black markets). It isn't a preference for anything, its involves freedom to buy what you prefer to buy.
