James Garner was a versatile actor. He was superb as Woodrow Call in "Streets of Laredo." To me, Tommy Lee Jones was Call, but Garner made me forget that for a while. Jon Voight was superb as well in a knockoff "Return to Lonesome Dove." McMurtry killed off Newt Dobbs (which made "Return" an impossible premise) because he was so p1ssed at the prospect of the knockoff, but I still enjoyed it.

Nobody but Robert Duvall could do Gus, though.
